Artificial Christmas Trees And The Christian Family

13th Dec 2010

You wouldn’t be surprised to know that even the famous Christmas tree has a colourful history, transferred from generations to generations, in different parts of the world. The Christmas tree has a dozen origins and up to now, nobody can exactly tell as to where really the custom of setting up of the Christmas tree has ever started. In fact, it is actually even harder to determine why it is called the Christmas tree.

There is a story that tells about a certain brotherhood somewhere in Europe who started building trees inside their castles during the yuletide month and they adorn the trees with food and colored paper. And the fun part of it all is that when Christmas morning arrives, the children of the members of the brotherhood, run as fast they could -the moment that they wake up- towards the tree to get as many goodies as they can.

In another episode, men and women of an old European village cut a big tree and set it up in the middle of the town and when night falls and the festivities start, this group of men and women sing and dance in front of the tree and before the celebration ends, they torch the tree creating a huge fire.

Another version of the Christmas tree origin is that of a saint who, in his enthusiasm and fanaticism to prove to a German village that their god is no match to the true God, he cut down their sacred tree and out of the roots of that same tree prospered a fir tree. From that, the saint took it as a sign from God and from then on, he told all Christian families to set up a fir tree inside their houses as a commemoration of this wondrous event.

Whether these stories are true or not, what is certain is that Christmas trees are here to stay and they will continue to be a vital part of the Christian tradition of gift-giving and love every Christmas season. This Christmas tree custom has actually opened a new opportunity for many to sell artificial xmas trees. In fact, the beginning of the artificial trees is worth a day telling as well, since it entails a lot of stories too.

Did you know that the Germans had a hand in the making of the first artificial xmas tree? The very first artificial xmas tree was made by the Germans and it was made of wooden tree-shaped pyramids that when assembled together forms a great looking xmas tree. Unlike before when the synthetic xmas trees were made of wood, the modern ones are made of fiber optic and the widely-used polyvinyl chloride. It is noteworthy and fun at the same time to know that the first artificial xmas trees had goose feathers as leaves colored with green paint. And this type of xmas tree made its way to the United States where it became very popular. However, in the 1930s, there were some drastic changes in the design of the artificial Christmas tree and the Addis Brush Company made the very first artificial xmas tree using brush bristles.

The machines used to make these brushes are the same machines used to manufacture toilet brushes and yes, they were colored green to create that tree effect. And for quite some time, the brush trees were immensely popular and truckloads were even exported to Great Britain where it also shared the same popularity as in the US. The brush trees were more accommodating in terms of decorations compared to the old wooden Christmas trees.
