Spread a little warmth and happiness – knit this simple beanie for an AIDS orphan in South Africa

You will need

1 ball 8ply or DK yarn – 1 pair 5mm needles and tapestry needle for sewing up

Instructions

Cast on  90sts

Row 1: (K2, P2) to end of row

Row 2: (P2, K2) to end of row

These 2 rows form the double rib pattern.  Continue in double rib pattern until work measures 10cm from the start/

Change to single rib pattern as follows (stocking stitch variation below)

Row 1: (right side): (K1, P1) to end of row

Row 2: Knit to end of row

Row 3:  (K1, P1) to end of row

Row 4: (K8, K2 tog) to end of row……….81 sts

Row 5:  (K1, P1) to end of row

Row 6: (K7, K2 tog) to end of row………..72 sts

Rows 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17,: (K1, P1) to end of row

Row 8: (K6, K2 tog) to end of row………..63 sts

Row 10: (K5, K2 tog) to end of row………..54 sts

Row 12: (K4, K2 tog) to end of row………..45 sts

Row 14: (K3, K2 tog) to end of row………..36 sts

Row 16: (K2, K2 tog) to end of row………..27 sts

Row 18: (K1, K2 tog) to end of row………..18 sts

Repeat row 18 until only one st remains.

Cast off leaving a long tail of yarn for sewing up.

Stocking Stitch Variation

At the end of the double rib pattern, work every odd-numbered row to purl intead of rib.  Row 1 is the wrong side.

To Make Up

With right sides together, sew the center back seam from top to bottom, using a flat seam for the double rib section so the cuff acn be turned back
