It is called a slip knot. To make a slip knot you need to first make a loop, slip two of your fingers through the hole leaving a tail. You then twist your fingers and pull one loop over the other and then tighten the knot. This is the foundation step and if you do not get your slip know right your whole work will be ruined.

Crochet is done like a chain. You create a loop with the yarn and then slip your hook into the loop and then pull. This action is carried out several times and as you continue doing it the chain grows. To increase single crochet, you have to make topstitches in one. To decrease single crochet, you have to draw up loop in next two stitches that follow. After that you have to yarn over and draw through three loops.
