Crochet is a skill which takes some effort and diligence to acquire and master. Like any skill there are some basics which, when known, can make learning crochet easier for beginners. The purpose of this article is to give you 3 tips that will make it easier for you to learn how to crochet.

Tip 1crochet is all about the stitches. This is the most basic element. There are so many stitches to learn and, depending on where you live, some stitches are known by different names. So the first tip is to master the chain stitch. This is the easiest stitch to learn and forms the basis for all the other stitches.

Tip 2 – The correct hook size. Selecting the correct size of hook for the product you are making is important. Choose the pattern you want to use and then get the correct hook to go with the yarn you have chosen to give you the right gauge for your pattern.

The number of stitches per inch is called the “gauge”. And the number of stitches you get per inch depends entirely on the size of hook and the diameter of the yarn you choose to use. Obviously the bigger these are, the less stitches you will get to the inch. The pattern will tell you the gauge to use and all you need to do is use the correct size needle and yarn to give you that gauge.

Tip 3 – Choose your yarn carefully. The yarn you choose must suit the pattern you are making. You need to consider the type of fiber the yarn is made of, the thickness or “weight” of the yarn and whether it fits in your budget or not. Ideally you should purchase all of the yarn needed to finish the pattern at one time, making sure it all comes from the same batch so that there will be no color variation when you have finished.
