Shawl Knitting Pattern – How to Make an Elegant Shawl
knitting
This shawl knitting pattern is a wonderful lace pattern that makes a simple rectangular piece look extra special. It looks similarly to the musical note referred to as the grace note. It’s also written as a flag and a staff coupled with a diagonal strikethrough; and made up of a series of 3 pattern repeats with an additional knit between every panel and on every edge.
The project can be worn as a shawl, scarf or as a skinny wrap. You can even tie it at the waist like a belt.
You’ll need:
1. 3 skeins of merino or approximately 4 hundred yards of light weight merino.
2. Scissors
3. A pair of size 7 US needles
4. Yarn needle
Gauge:
20 rows for every 4 inches (5 rows and 5 stitches per inch) and 20 stitches in pattern.
Size:
5 ft long and 10 inches wide.
Let’s start!
1. Begin by casting on 49 stitches.
2. Work on the elegant pattern outlined below, thrice across every row. On the knit side, knit the first stitch, a single stitch between every pattern repeat and the final stitch of the row. For the purl, purl across.
3. Keep on doing this until the project measures approximately 60 inches or 5 ft long and end in row 16.
4. Bind off in purl (on the purl side).
5. Cut the yarn.
6. Weave in all ends and don’t forget to block.
