There are a lot of hobbies and activities that you can try during your free time. You can try doing sports, exercising, reading or even sleeping. One hobby that you can try that is both fun and practical is soap making. This hobby is a great way to stimulate your creative mind while also working with your hands.

The first ingredient that you will need in soap making is oil. You will have to select your oil wisely to make the soap with the properties that you desire. Coconut oil will give you a soap that is good for lathering. Vegetable oil will make your soap softer, while olive oil is good for those with sensitive skin.

Once you have decided what kind of oil to use, you will also need to obtain some lye. Purified lye is better as you will be able to use the cold process of soap making. This is much easier as you will not need to heat your mixture while making your soap, and it also results in soap with better quality. But if you are unable to obtain pure lye, the mixture will also suffice.

The first thing that you need to do in soap making is to dissolve your lye in water. But before doing this, make sure that you have the correct quantity of ingredients so that your soap will come out perfectly. Using too much lye may make your soap too caustic, while too little lye will make your soap to soft and mushy.

Once the lye has dissolved, oil can now be added to the mixture. This will need to be continuously mixed until it becomes homogenous. Other ingredients that can be added once this is done are lotions, dyes and fragrant oils so that your soap will have other special properties. Once you are satisfied with your mixture, this can then be poured into molds for them to cool.

Once your soap has hardened, you will still need to age it if you used the cold method. This will take around a month before you will be able to use them. As for soaps made through the hot process, your soap will be ready to use once it has completely cooled.

Soap making is very easy as it requires only a few ingredients and the steps are also very few. Children can even take this up as a hobby as long as there is adult supervision due to the dangers of using lye. You can think of different ways on how to design your soap, and give it the properties that you like as well.

So try out a new hobby and try soap making today. This is a hobby that will surely keep you occupied for a very long time. It is also a very practical hobby as you will be able to use your creations in the bathroom when you shower, or as a decoration similar to soaps that you see in hotel bathrooms. You may even give your soaps as gifts or sell them if you become really good at making them.
